dearest gypsies;

where do you find the courage to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, and go and do the things you dream of doing?

in my college tomorrow morning they'll be auditioning models for a charity fashion show in the city. it's for a good cause and always seems to be so much fun. but i know so many people here from home and i guess i'm just worried what they'll think of me if they see me go... that i think i'm wonderful and miles above everyone else.

god gypsies, it isn't like that at all.... i'm just irrevocably in love with fashion, and the glamour and the excitement of it all. and even if i go, there's nothing to say i'll get past these first stages... i'm not the tallest girl in the world, nor am i brimming with confidence. but i've been feeling so lost and small in college since i began in september, and i think this may be just what i need to start doing things and becoming part of... something. i know i won't forgive myself for the rest of the year if i don't even try - making myself do it is the difficulty.

darling people - how do you make yourself swallow your fear and just go?

So I'm starting to bum out about the cold weather and need to look on the bright side...

What are you most looking forward to in the cold weather and/or what is your favorite thing about winter in NYC?

11/18/08 11:54 pm - [info]_cagesorwings_ posting in [info]newyorkers - Piano Move/Tune

Does anyone have a recommendation for piano moving and tuning?
I am producing a student written/directed/acted musical and we've got a piano basically donated, we just need to move it from one place to another safely and then get it tuned. We're on a low budget, so we're trying to hunt down someone who will give us a break on the price or is just fairly reasonable (but good) in general.
We'd be moving from the piano from 2nd & 6th to 2nd & 26th, so not awfully far. There are also no stairs involved!
Any suggestions welcome. I couldn't find anything specifically related to pianos in the tags. Thanks!

11/18/08 04:27 pm - [info]dwell posting in [info]lj_maintenance - We've moved! (but still have to finish unpacking)

EDIT@6:54PM PST

We just implemented a temporary fix for our internal network and it *looks* promising. We'll let it bake in overnight and see how well it performs tonight and tomorrow.

------

Hi hi!

We've completed the majority of the move and had the site back up by 20:00 UTC (hey, look, I can post! You can read! Yay!) , but there's still some lingering issues that we need to clean up and are aware of so please be a little more patient while we wrap up the odds and ends.

I want to echo the lj_releases post where we thank [info]burr86 and [info]dormando for their ceaseless efforts, skill and knowledge. The LJ Ops and Engineering teams have/are *still* working their butts off but without burr86 and dormando's expertise, we could not have pulled this off.

For you techies, the slowness on our website is known, and the issue is currently isolated to oversubscribed ports on our core switches. That's direct from our vendor. Yeah, I know... Anyways, we're trying to implement a temporary workaround and we'll be looking to upgrade our hardware as a permanent solution. Please, hang in there a little longer!

Ha ha, just kidding.

Among the other cutbacks being rumored:

  • Elimination of the Z line

  • Cutting the G and M trains in half, giving them fewer stops

  • No more express service on the J train

  • Overnight trains that now run every 20 minutes will be stretched to half-hour intervals

  • Getting rid of dozens of bus lines with low ridership on nights and weekends

  • Over 1,500 pink slips for station agent and administrative jobs

  • A larger than expected fare hike

11/18/08 05:22 pm - [info]ohoctopi posting in [info]newyorkers - roommates needed for bushwick loft

A friend and I just got a place in bushwick off the L stop- Jefferson. The subway is less than two blocks away. It's a two bedroom loft, with amazing features. We are closing off the top of the one bedroom for some one to sleep there, and building a two person loft bed/space in the other room. they just put in all new kitchen appliances that are super nice, and are making a wall of cabinets right above. here's the craigslist post:

http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/nfb/911909723.html

There is access to the roof right in our hallway. We'll be on fourth floor, there is a large freight elevator, and it's pets friendly. I have a rabbit, and she is debating on bringing her cats (she lives in baltimore).

Lease is December 1st
and if we get two more roommates like we wish... rent will $487 a month per person.
The other girl put down first month's rent already, but you and I will obviously have to give that to her asap.

It's an amazing place, and you'll get the bonus of living with a chef (me!). haha.

I'm rearing close to 19, and she is 20. Both quiet; she's a student, and I work a lot. We don't have crazy standards , but email me a little bit about yourself and any questions.

Thanks,
Jaimee

Sorry if this is not allowed or something, but I'm travelling to NYC on Friday for the first time and was wondering if anybody knew if there was a Hot Topic on 5th ave? I have no idea on locations etc, I just know I'm staying in the holiday express Inn on 5th ave. Also, anybody know if there is a Sephora close by?

Thanks

11/18/08 03:02 pm - [info]compnerd posting in [info]newyorkers - Ingredients help?

I'm brewing some holiday beer and I am in need of the following ingredients:

1 Cup Honey
1 Tsp Fresh Ground Ginger
1/8 Tsp Fresh Ground Cloves
1/2 Tsp Pure Almond Extract

Is there a place near Grand Central (preferably not the GC Market as the prices are high) that would have these items? If I must get them at GC Market, so be it. :) My better half works near GC and it'd be great if she can bring the items home when she leaves work.

Thanks much!

Can anyone recommend a handyman for a couple small jobs, such as:

install 2 ceiling light fixtures and 1 wall coat rack

if location matters: Astoria

I know I can find listings on Craig's List but I'm looking for a recommendation before I let a random man with power tools into my apartment..

Hey all -

New York Magazine published a list of some local charities that are really hurting due to the current financial crisis.  I thought I would share.  If you have some extra money or time, please consider helping out one of these organizations:

I'm meeting up with some friends on Saturday afternoon for some leisurely beer drinking. I'm looking for a place with a substantial selection of beer  where we can chat, linger and eat something too. I'm thinking maybe some place that specializes in beer & moules frites, something like that. I've got a few ideas and I'm Yelping for more, but any suggestions you might have are welcome too. I like to find new places.
Looking for locations in chelsea, hell's kitchen, west or east village, or williamsburg.

thanks!

Hello!

I'm looking to get a new haircut. Do any of you have some inspiring pictures of hair that could fit long, thick, wavy-ish hair? My hair is rather versatile - it all depends on the weather. I prefer layers to keep everything from getting too tangled.
Thank you all for your suggestions ♥
